About Making Contact

Contact is the leading national arts organisation placing young people’s decision-making and leadership at the heart of everything. Young people aged 13+ work alongside our staff in deciding our programme, making staff appointments and are on our Board of Trustees.

Making Contact is a research project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to unearth and compile the personal journeys of artists, participants, staff and audience members who have connected with Contact over the years. The project was designed by Construct, Contact’s young capital development team, who are informing our plans to transform the building for the next generation of audiences, artists and young people. Construct wanted to see how being part of the organisation had impacted on a whole range of individuals.

Over the past year we have reconnected with artistic directors, technicians, audience members, participants, poets, staff members, playwrights, architects and board members who have all played key roles in shaping Contact’s history from 1965 to 2016. We have collected more than 60 oral histories – we’ve filmed in locations across the country, gathering stories close to home and much further afield.

In addition, archivist Heather Roberts has worked with a group of young people to survey our collections and bring our dusty archive to life. We’ve uncovered photos, programmes, meeting minutes and manuscripts.

Each individual has a story to tell. It is clear that as a building, as a creative community and as a catalyst, Contact has had a transformative impact on a huge number of people. This is only the start of our journey unravelling Contact’s 60-year story. Please join us and share your Contact experience in the Your Stories section.
